It is an open fact that whatever paycheck we get, we are never satisfied. We constantly strive and look for more and due to this we become an indispensable part of rat race. Same happened with Larry, who worked as a legal assistant before switching to sales a few years ago. This New Rochelle, N.Y., resident left his last sales job at a small manufacturer of industrial products in July. Prior to this he was working with a career coach and joined a public-speaking group to sharpen his presentation skills.
He strongly believes the skills he's developed in prior jobs qualify him to do something like in-house corporate training, but his resume does not show experience in the profession. So alike to others he too faces a question — how to get noticed when applying? According to online business magazines, an important step is to tailor his resume to fit the criteria for jobs he's targeting. To be more precise, his goal with any resume creation today is to get the interview, and then in the interview he can tell his story.
Many corporate firstly review your resumes electronically; reason being there are hundreds of applications submitted for one opening. And when companies with jobs to fill tap into a database, they do searches through countless resumes and try to find the perfect person in that proverbial haystack.
If you are looking for a job change, look at job ad as ‘Cliff Notes’. This means, when some mid-career professionals remember the days when the way to get noticed was high-quality paper or a well-designed resume. Moreover, applicants shouldn't pay attention to the paper quality or presentation of the resumes they carry when meeting prospective employers. Because it's the electronic one these days that's going to get you to the interview.
Business week magazines even quoted that e-résumés can easily break one-page rule. Job seekers who are worried about too much detail should know the rule that a resume should be one, or at the most two, pages long, doesn't apply to electronic versions posted on various job sites. Many job seekers create multiple resumes, so that a detailed look at your skills and experience is given. And lastly, we would like to mention that no one wants to be that one person in the job market who's lacking a credential he fears the competition may have. What is worse is having a job offer rescinded or even worse, being terminated post-hire.
A job hunter shouldn't vacillate to create multiple resumes based on what kind of job they're seeking. Each should be perfectly tailored to reflect the latest language of the field, which in some cases might require research up front. For instance, in recruiting, the language has moved from "human resources" to "personnel" to "client capital."
So, if you’re looking for a job change, it’s better to have a good resume.
