One of the most unique and innovative films ever made in the history of Hollywood
Schindler’s List
 |
cinema, Schindler’s List (1993) is an unbelievable story of a man’s triumph over evil which made a big difference in the history of mankind; a compelling truth. This movie was adopted from Thomas Keneally’s biographical novel Schindler’s Ark.
Schindler’s List presents the unforgettable true story of Oscar Schindler, a member of the Nazi party, womanizer and a profiteer from the war, who made kits and field kitchenware for the German army during World War II. Apart from this, the story also presents his humane side to the world when he risked his life while saving more than 1100 Jews from the clutches of the brutal Nazi army during the Holocaust.
In Black and White
Schindler was a German businessman whose was drifted apart from the Polish Jews when he favoured the 1,200 workers that were working under him in ‘Emalia’ at Krakow. Schindler with the help of his Jewish accountant Itzhak bought the life of these workers, with the help of his contacts in the Nazi army.
Schindler’s List vividly re-creates the dark and chillingly terrible period of the World War II in Poland where the Jews were driven out of their homes and robbed off their businesses
as well. They were then sent to ghettos for forced labour in Plaszow, and finally to the concentration camps for cheap execution.
Steven Spielberg first offered the movie to the original survivor of the Holocaust, Roman Polanski, but after his refusal Spielberg went on to direct the movie himself.
Tolerating Intolerance
Schindler’s List touches the hearts of the viewers in a disturbing manner, leaving a lasting

impression of the three hour struggle between life and death in the most inhumane conditions in the history of mankind. Spielberg conveys his message without advocating the audiences and at the same time being subtle and thoughtful.
Only a few coloured scenes are incorporated in the movie in order to highlight the intensity and seriousness of the theme. Despite its shocking subject, the movie successfully uncovers the essential part of human instinct i.e. hope and dignity.
Listed Honours
Spielberg’s Schindler’s List won almost every single honour including the Academy statue for the Best Film and the Best Director. Apart from its soul searching theme, the movie is also shot using original locations to serve the purpose. The background score and colour are in sync with the over all seriousness of the movie.
