Ah, we are finally back. Our last part we ended with a thought that those at the bottom of the barrel have other things to worry about but have you ever thought about those at the top. With the top we mean, those who are at the top of the performance scale, who are the big players. These guys have to understand how vital they truly are to their employers. They should know their worth and even responsibilities. The obvious reason is that they are the ones who bring up average productivity, no small feat at large corporations.
Online business magazines feel these guys are the creative, skilled, ambitious, and driven players who possess the power of writing the book. Moreover, they can also help companies emerge as leaders while others falter. Well on a broader scale, the story is somewhat different at smaller companies. This happens because things are hard to camouflage and only performance speaks. If you are useless to the operation and not able to generate results, it becomes painfully clear. And if you are a star and outshine your counterparts, you shine bright in your teammates' eyes.
 |
It might sound confusing for you, but the main difference is everyone working around or with you is probably too busy to stop and congratulate you. In fact, they expect you to get things done swiftly because they themselves are succeeding in their own way. Despite indulging in office poli-tricks people who stick with their values and ethics are always acknowledged and their hard work is rewarded. And this is evident when supervisors make employees feel privileged to be on the higher payroll. This is a clear signal that you should be elsewhere, where stars are in demand.
Before jumping into office poli-tricks, don’t forget what the company’s goals are. If someone is running a company, there might be a clear vision and aim in his or her mind. Well, maximum companies’ goals are high share price. But folks, the question here is:
• Does your company aim to be the top dawg on the court?
• Are they contented by being wannabes who get their paychecks bi-weekly, viewing 9-to-5 schedules as a challenging target to hit?
 |
This is something which you need to look into. When I was slogging in the service industry, it became painfully clear for me that my employers viewed idealistic frontline soldiers as troublemakers who had the desire to serve clients! That career of mine ended when my manager informed me that "I liked the client too much." Suffice it to mention my resignation letter was on his desk the very next morning.
Business week magazines always propagate that a great leader is a cheerleader. Talk to any financier that what they look for in a CEO or Operations Manager, and they will strongly propose that he or she is the one who will get the entire job done. If you want to stay away from office poli-tricks do not toot your own horn and give honors to others to do that for you. If you want to be heard and seen, then stand up and if you want to be appreciated, just shut-up.
