How to Switch to a Small Car

Written By: Vivek Sharma
With oil prices rising every day, what would be the best way to combat this raise? Either you stop using your car or switch onto a small fuel efficient car. Many of us have already done this honorable thing but at times we face some problems such as the space to carry the bikes, the skis, the toys, and even chairs. So guys have you thought, how do you make a smaller car work for you?
Ever since gas prices started rising online business magazines have been listing down various ways via which you can easily adapt to your small car. Here are some tips from car owners who’ve made the change.
 |
A) What’s essential:
There is no doubt that small cars have plenty of storage space but the problem is that drivers of larger cars and SUVs tend to use the vehicle as a mobile storage garage, which is not done. Anyone who is habitual of carrying loads of items will definitely find problems in adjusting to it but later you’ll find that there is no need to keep lawn chairs, towels, antifreeze and a walker in your car.
You’ll be surprised at how much goes into the garbage, if you select your items carefully. Car is used for traveling not for keeping stuffs which aren’t useful during the journey unless you own a big SUV. To cut the long story short, pack only what you need for the day then put it back in storage when you’re done.
B) Trim your stuff:
If you keep your car full with unnecessary stuffs, there won’t be space for useful items. Let me reiterate; carry the stuff which you think is necessary and would be used on a daily basis. If you have a small kid and you’re heading for a long trip, carry small toys instead of wagon and ride-on toys. Also there is no harm in using smaller suitcases as they easily make room inside using vacuum seal storage bags. Moreover, if we go on vacation, don’t bring stuffs like diapers, instead buy them there.
 |
C) Buy a rack:
If you need to carry skis, kayaks, surfboards or other large sporting equipments, consider installing a roof rack. If there is more stuff to be carried, add bike mounts, and you can even carry two bicycles on the roof of your car. Another option for transporting sports gear is installing a hitch or attaching a small trailer like a Dooit. The Dooit bills allow drivers to tote their toys and still economize on fuel.
D) Organize:
There are lots of storage products out there to help maximize the space in a smaller car, sp why not use them at the hour of need. Above all, there are car organizers that attach to the back of the seat or sit on a seat to carry toys, snacks, games, CDs and DVDs.
 |
E) Choose smaller car sensibly:
While shopping for a small car, take the car seat with you to the dealership to make sure it fits. There is harm in checking whether the car can pull a trailer, if that’s something you are going to need. You should also see side-by-side how much room a vehicle might have and if maybe you can squeeze a booster seat in-between two car seats and still get a golf bag in the hatch.
Though these are just five prime tips to be kept in mind while going for a small car, business week magazines keep on adding more to this list. After all its not about the car but about the space available.
