After nine days of weighing up, a jury of six men and six women, at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center declared celebrity designer Anand Jon Alexander guilty of forcible rape and 15 other sexual crimes. However, the jury found him not guilty on the charges of unlawful sexual intercourse, sexual penetration by a foreign object, and two counts of oral copulation of a person under the age of 18.

Deputy District Attorney Frances Young, who has worked closely with Deputy District Attorney Mara McIlvain of the Sex Crimes Division, the lead prosecutor in this case, told an online entertainment magazine, “This jury has sent a message that our community will not tolerate serial rapists and child molesters such as Anand Jon Alexander, who used the Internet to prey and victimize our children, and if they chose to do so, this jury has sent a message today that they will be held accountable and that these victims will receive justice.” Jon’s defense team of four lawyers said they were obviously disappointed and the case is still not over.
He was India’s big fashion hope on the international map. But, these charges have ensured that his once big a la mode business is now falling apart. Anand’s success story began in 1993 when he shifted base to US to study graphic design. From polishing his skills in designing metals for jewellery, to studying style at the Parsons School of Design… he armed himself with absolute knowledge required to build a brand. Spring 1999 his debut collection won rave reviews. Two sessions down the line, his line India Chic found space in Bergdorf Goodman, Maria Louisa and many other premium stores.

Most believe that this convicted designers success is an outcome of his brilliant marketing skills. He has dressed up society princesses, rubbed shoulders with celebrities… so much so; he himself became papparazzi’s favorite. Paris Hilton, Rosario Dawson, actress Lynn Whitfield, Madonna, Gina Torres, Oprah Winfrey and Janet Jackson have modeled for him. He had everything going for him. A line of AJ jeans that would retail for hundreds of dollar was one of the ambitious projects he was working on. However, just months before the launch, he got arrested for multiple charges of sexual offence.
Reportedly, this fashion designer wants to appeal. “He’s disappointed, obviously, but he hasn’t given up hope,” Defence Attorney Leonard B Levine told an online entertainment magazine. Jon is scheduled to appear before Judge Wesley for sentencing on January 13 2009.
